Player Profile Jazzlyn McMillan

by William Avery

Jazzlyn McMillan has had the ball in her hands since the age of 4 thanks to her dad, Steve McMillan, who was a high school basketball coach at the time. Inspired by South Carolina Gamecock greats, Aleighsa Welch and A’ja Wilson, Jazzlyn would fall in love with the game of basketball. McMillan, a seventh grader, has the skills that has afforded her the opportunity to bypass middle school basketball and join the varsity team at Fairfield Central High School. The leap in competition hasn’t fazed the confident but humble youngster. To current date McMillan is averaging 8ppg, 2.5apg, and 2.1rpg for 8-3 Fairfield Central High School in Winnsboro, SC. “I really don’t think about my age when playing the game. I just go out there and play basketball.” Although McMillan is very sure of her ability, she also understands that there is a lot more work to do before she’s a complete player. Finishing through contact, being a more consistent shooter, and handling the ball against pressure are areas she would like to improve in. Jazzlyn, being extremely versatile, it comes as no surprise that LaMelo Ball is McMillan’s favorite NBA player. Just like Ball she possesses the size, skill, and basketball IQ to impact the game in a variety of ways. McMillan has a rare ability to see plays a few steps ahead, plays the right way, and always plays hard. These are characteristics of a great player. I’m not anointing McMillan as great today but she’s definitely on the right track. When it’s all said and done at the high school level, McMillan hopes to have a State Championship and be the schools all time leading scorer. Currently in the STEM Early College Program, McMillan plans to graduate high school with an associates degree. I think it’s safe to say that Jazzlyn McMillan gets it done on the court and in the classroom. The future is bright for this young lady!
